Lincoln School and Statue in 1900

The Lincoln School was first built in 1865, and then rebuilt in the 1870's after a fire destroyed the first building. Built by San Francisco sculptor, Pietro Mezzara, the Lincoln statue at the entrance to the building was one of the first Lincoln statues created after the President's assassination. While Mezzara was noted for other sculptures, such as "Romulas and Remus" for the Mechanic's Pavillion, the Lincoln Statue is his most famous.

The Lincoln statue stood for approximately 23 years until one day, after years of exposure, Lincoln's extended arm fell off. A new statue, cast in bronze, was set in the original's place in 1889. Students at the school tended to the statue, repainting the bronze for years until 1906 when the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fires melted the statue until all that remained was the index finger of Lincoln's hand.
