The Levittown Mural

Tagged by:
This unique hand-carved mural in the adult reading room of the Levittown Public Library is the creation of artist/teacher Stanley Kaplan. Literary Classics Sculpted In Wood represents five classics: Panel 1: "Beowulf", Panel II: Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales", Panel III: Shakespeare's "Macbeth", Panel IV: Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities", Panel V: Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" Poe's: "The Raven". It was dedicated to the youth of Levittown Memorial High School, in 1959 when it was installed in the school library. When Levittown Memorial was closed as a high school, the 1983 Senior and Junior classes, with support of the Parent Teachers Association, requested that the mural be placed in the public library for the enjoyment of the entire community. The request was approved by the Levittown Board of Education and the mural was installed in Levittown's Public Library in 1984.
